Taking Online Courses at Western

Accessing Your Course

Online courses at Western are delivered via the Canvas Learning Management System. Students can access Canvas via their MyWestern Portal. To log-in to MyWestern to access your email and Canvas: Go to MyWestern.wwu.edu and log in with your universal log in. If you have difficulty viewing WWU’s website it may be that your browser needs to be updated.

Honorlock is an online proctoring solution that records the exam session allowing students to test at their own convenience.

Textbooks

WWU's Bookstore has a price comparison website that will compare the price for your textbook against various online retailers (Amazon, Alibris, etc.). Plan on purchasing your textbooks early and always be sure you are purchasing the correct edition of the book for this course. If you have any questions related to your textbooks, be sure to ask your instructor.

If your textbook requires an access code, be sure to purchase the edition that includes the access code. If you have any questions about the textbook requirements for your course, verify details with your instructor.

Textbooks for self-paced courses are not kept in stock at the WWU Bookstore.  Books are available through online booksellers, plan on purchasing your textbooks early and always be sure you are purchasing the correct edition of the book from the syllabus.

Timeline

For all online courses, students are responsible for reviewing the course syllabus and following all established due dates.

Information for Term-Based Courses

Online courses correspond with the academic schedule on campus and follow Western's general dates and deadlines, unless otherwise noted. All course work must be completed during this time as outlined in your course syllabus. The syllabus for the class will be located on the Canvas site and should be available the first day of classes.

All online classes are subject to enrollment. Enrolled students will be notified if the minimum has not been met and if the class will be cancelled.

Information for Self-Paced Courses

Students can start a Self-Paced course anytime and complete the course at their own pace within a six-month time frame.

General Policies and Procedures

Enrollment in WesternOnline courses does not constitute enrollment to the university. Non-matriculated students must reapply each quarter and enrollment is on a space available basis only. If you wish to enroll as a degree seeking student visit Admissions.

Credit Hours

Western’s academic year is divided into quarters (fall, winter, spring, and summer) and all academic credits are stated and issued in quarter hours. For additional information, refer to the WWU Registrar’s Office: Registration Policies page.

Grading Policy

Unless otherwise stated all courses are graded on the A-F system. Pass (P)/No Pass (NP) grading is available on an optional basis in elective courses only. Students who wish to change grade mode must do so before completing 40% of the work for Self-Paced courses and Term-Based online classes before the 4th Friday of the quarter. The request must be made in writing at the Outreach and Continuing Education office.
